TRAINING TRANSGENDER PERFORMERS: WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO KNOW
Saturday, February 13, 1:30-3:30p.m. Via Zoom
Open to ALL Eastern Region Members!
This 2-hour presentation is about training transgender performers from the perspective of a voice teacher and many transgender artists. Gwendolyn Walker, Professor of Voice for Musical Theatre at Penn State University and a Transgender Artist [one of Gwen’s current New York City-based students] will discuss topics related to training transgender, gender non-binary, and gender non-conforming students including preferred pronouns; a brief history of transgender and gender non-conforming humans; dysphoria; past trauma; violence and suicide; assigning non-heteronormative collaborative repertoire; dead names; gender identities; inclusion in the syllabi and in the studio; and understanding the difference between sex and gender. The importance of educators having a deeper understanding of this topic cannot be overstated. All attendees will also receive a vocabulary sheet and a “What to Say/What Not to Say” list.
